Dodgers win R.P. Rithet Cup!

League winning Dodgers took on the Jays in an exciting game 3 of the Mavericks Playoffs on Thursday, August 25 at Lambrick Park to win the RP Rithet Cup and become the 2011 Mavericks League Champs. Congratulations to Kevin Seginowich and his squad on a stellar season! MVP for the playoffs, Bobby Scott, pitched 6 innings and hit 2 solo bombs to lead the Dodgers to an 8-4 victory over the Jays in the final game.

Playoff recap: First round featured the Cards (5th) vs Braves (4th) and Padres (6th) vs Athletics (3rd). Braves won a tight series against the Cards while the A's won 2 straight against the Padres to advance to the semis. The Athletics then faced off against the Jays (2) in a 3 game series, with the Jays prevailing, 2 games to 1. The Braves met up with the Dodgers (1) in the other semis and took it right to the last inning before the Dodgers came from behind to win by one run in the rubber match of their series.

Due to a rainout on Monday, August 22, the scheduled day for game 1 of the finals, the series was changed to a best of 3 instead of best of 5. The first game on Tuesday played to a 5-5 tie and was called due to darkness in the 8th inning. The game was continued the following night and was settled in the 10th inning with Lou Edmonds knocking in the winning run. The Jays went on to win game 2, played immediately after the completion of game 1, by a score of 2-1 to even the series at 1-1. On Thursday, starting pitchers Bobby Scott and Trevor Strandlund faced off on the mound in the final game. The Dodgers, led by the offensive stick of Bobby Scott won the final game 8-4 to become this year's champs!

I want to thank all the players, staff, fans and supporters of our league for coming out this season! It was a successful year for the Mavericks both as a league and as regional representatives in the BC Senior Men's Tournament held in Kelowna on the August long weekend where the All Stars won the BCs and gained a birth to the National Championships next year in Prince George.

This upcoming week, a select squad of Mavericks, headed by Aaron Banner, is representing Victoria in the upcoming Grand Forks International Tournament.

Victoria Mavericks go 5-0 to win BC Senior Men's Baseball Championship.

The Victoria Mavericks Senior Men's All Star team beat the Coquitlam Angels 1-0 on Monday in the final game of the BC Senior Men's Baseball Championship tournament held in Kelowna BC at Elks Stadium, July 29-Aug 1, to become the 2011 BC Senior Baseball Champions. The Mavericks squad now qualifies for the 2012 Canadian National Championship Tournament to be held in Prince George in August, 2012.

Winning pitcher of the final game, Keith Shaw of Victoria, went 6 strong shutout innings with 4 strikeouts to lead the Mavericks to their victory - Matt Atkinson came in the top of the 7th to shut down the Angels offense and got the save. Maverick's Lanny Burrows scored the single run in the game.

Tournament recap for Maverick's games: In game 1 of the tournament, Maverick's starter Shaun Loglisci went the distance pitching a 4-0 shutout against the Trail Orioles. Offensively, Kyle Pockett went 3 for 3 and a walk.

Game 2 was highlighted by Graham Campbell's complete game victory against the 2010 National Champions, Burnaby Bulldogs. Final score 3-1 for the Mavericks.

In game 3 of round robin play, Maverick's Matt Atkinson threw 7 full innings for the win against the Kamloops Sun Devils. The offense was led by Sean Murphy with a 3 run home run. Mavericks beat the Sun Devils 7-2.

The Coquitlam Angels, also 3-0 in the opposite bracket of round robin play in the 8 team tournament, faced off against the 3-0 Mavs in the semi finals on Sunday night at Elks Stadium. A spectacular performance on the mound by winning pitcher, Jesse Dill, combined with a clutch hitting offense by the mavericks led them to a 6-2 victory over the Angels in the semifinals.

Kyle Pockett, the Mavericks centerfielder and leadoff hitter, was awarded tournament MVP, going 10 for 15 during the weekend. Giving up only 5 runs in 5 games, the Mavericks never once trailed in all their games in the tournament.

The competing teams in the tournament included the host Kelowna Jays, Trail Orioles, Burnaby Bulldogs (2010 National Champions), Nanaimo Coalminers, Prince George Grays, Coquitlam Angels and the Kamloops Sun Devils.

Coaches for the Mavericks All Star Team were Bob Burrows, Aaron Banner and Patrick Nahirney (GM and President of Victoria Mavericks Baseball).
